CELEBRATING THE GREAT TWENTY-EIGHT

I am honored and pleased to be the President of FTYCMA through February 2024. FTYCMA and our national organization, AMATYC, represent a special group of educators who are more than content experts; we are encouragers, role models, mentors, and advisors for the diverse group of incredible students with whom we get to work. In addition, we serve on committees and other college workgroups, lead college-wide and department-wide initiatives, and hold several office hours to round out our weeks, all while performing our primary function of teaching our classes.

At the state college level, math is often viewed as the subject that students “have to” take to complete their programs of study. Math faculty at our 28 colleges work under this perception daily and with great grace. Our identity is not singularly defined. We support students who are in our classes as a transition from high school to upper division math courses as well as students who are taking our classes as the last math class (or their last course) in their programs of study. We provide support to other disciplines as we incorporate various applications into our already-packed curricula. In addition, we respond to state-level changes that are mandated, all while keeping student success our primary goal.

Recognizing, celebrating, and getting to know math faculty at our sister institutions is one of my goals as I humbly take the mantel from our immediate past president, Dr. Joni Pirnot, who brilliantly led FTYCMA through the challenges that the pandemic brought. As we return to in-person events, we want to connect more and celebrate the work of our incredible colleagues while we continue to provide a forum for promoting the professional welfare and development of our members.

Continue to stay involved (or get involved) in FTYMCA and let us hear about the innovative work you are doing. Our math programs in the colleges of the 28 sister institutions are second to none because of you. Please consider sharing your ideas and practices at the Joint FL-MAA/FTYCMA conference in the spring or any upcoming conferences this year (please visit Events page for more details) . Each of you do important work that should be recognized and celebrated!

Thank you for the opportunity to lead FTYCMA alongside the dedicated FTYCMA officers as we work together to develop and improve the mathematics experience at the GREAT TWENTY-EIGHT.
