The Fall Retreat each year in October provides an opportunity for mathematics educators at Florida community and state colleges to participate in academic and social dialogue about current events, issues and practices affecting all mathematics educators in Florida. Sandy Cohen, Mathematics Professor at St. Petersburg College, has established the Bobby Cohen Memorial Scholarship in memory of her beloved husband, Bobby, who passed away in August 2015. This scholarship helps to facilitate the attendance of FTYCMA members to the annual Fall Retreat.
In collaboration with the Florida section of MAA, FTYCMA provides additional opportunities for professional development and academic and social dialogue at the Joint Meetings each spring term in January or February. The potential experience at this event is not unlike that of the AMATYC Annual Conference held in the fall term each year, but in a more intimate environment.
FTYCMA has been a major financial supporter of the Math Olympics held late spring of each year at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville for over twenty years.
In even numbered years, FTYCMA presents a Teaching Excellence Award to one of its members who has at least 5 years of teaching experience, has exhibited outstanding teaching ability, and has created or adapted innovative teaching methods or materials. (Special consideration is given by the committee to those who have shared such practices with colleagues.)
In odd numbered years, FTYCMA presents an Outstanding Service Award to one of its members who has made an exemplary contribution to the teaching profession through length of service, advocacy of mathematics education, and contributions both to the success of FTYCMA and to the progress of others in the field.
For the past several years, FTYCMA has awarded an affiliate scholarship in the form of a free early registration to the AMATYC Annual Conference subsidized by the AMATYC Executive Board. Recipients of the scholarship must be a member of FTYCMA and AMATYC with a priority given to those who have never attended the AMATYC Annual Conference before.
FTYCMA is the only state-wide organization in Florida whose primary focus is on both college preparatory AND college level mathematics in community and state colleges.
